What If Cockney Was The WORLD Language

May 15, 2008 / by EdmondDantes

We recently discussed the importance of the English language, as it emerges as the language of the world. It is the language of politics and economics, and is spoken or understood, by almost all progressive societies. Should this endanger other languages? Should other cultures feel threatened by the constant pressure to learn English?

Personally, I am jealous of other cultures in which they are encouraged from a young age to learn several languages. I have lived abroad and realize the difficulty in communicating with people who do not speak "MY" language. However, while abroad, I must realize that "I" am the one who cannot speak "THEIR" language. While it is awfully convenient that everyone learn English, and convenient for me that English is my first language, I don't think that this should squash all attempts at preserving other languages.

I rather enjoy trying to speak and understand other languages, and although it is easy for me to imitate, I have always had trouble retaining the knowledge and putting it to good use. The only words I remember in German, are how to order beers, and lots of dirty words. I managed to do fairly well in my French class, however, without the opportunity to practice it is slowly fading.

It is entirely true, that some things get lost is translation. I think it is important that the world choose a language in which everyone can be engaged. As I said before, I am certainly happy it is English, but I don't believe this should hinder the developments and education of other languages. I mean, even English has evolved over the years to comprise more words than any other language in existence, and most of these words have their roots in OTHER languages! The amount of various dialects of English alone could be several languages amongst themselves. English is somewhat relatable to Christianity, in which although most factions worship the same God, and practice similarly, they all think their form of Christianity is the best.

Personally, if I had it my way, I WOULD choose English as the world language, if the others were to fade out...but not proper english, or California English, Not Prim and Proper British...NO!

I would choose good old cockney rhyming slang!
